  • Yes, our records are all AAA. They are 100% analog. They are recorded to tape and cut directly from the tape. The mastering engineers we work with are some of the best in the business, including mastering legend Bernie Grundman. They use an all analog signal path and do not use a digital preview head when cutting lacquers. If you are buying an LP or a reel to reel tape on Analog Tone Factory, it’s 100% analog. No computers were harmed in the making of our records!

  • While we think digital technology has made a lot of progress, we still prefer the sound of tape when it’s done right. As musicians, we are familiar with how live music sounds. We have compared the same microphone feed recorded digitally, and to various tape machines. We think the recordings to tape sound better and are a closer representation of the music. We also think keeping the signal analog all the way sounds better. We think our LPs and R2R tapes sound better than the digital versions - even though we also take great care to produce the best digital versions we can.

  • We like tracking all the musicians in the same room, so as to allow the band to play together and hear each other naturally, and not through headphones. We aim to capture the sound, feel and emotion of bands playing live. We like the sound of the great recordings of the fifties and sixties on labels such as Blue Note, Prestige, Columbia, Contemporary, Pacific Jazz and others. We admire the work of engineers Rudy Van Gelder, Roy DuNann, Fred Plaut, Bob Fine and David Jones, among others.

Our records are engineered by famed engineer James Farber and/or Analog Tone Factory co-founder Pete Rende.

We seek to work in the best sounding spaces and studios and use the absolute best microphones available to us (Telefunken 251, Neumann M49, Neumann U47, AKG C12, RCA 44 etc). We bring our own Ampex 351 tape machine wherever we record or mix, and are planning to also bring our own Altec consoles to record in the future.

  • Yes, we include free digital downloads with our LPs and R2R tapes. We use Bandcamp for our downloads. Bandcamp gives you a choice of formats. You can pick the most high resolution files we offer, which are 192/24 PCM, for no extra charge, or download in whatever format suits you.

  • We currently offer quarter inch tapes at 15 ips (CCIR/IEC). If you are interested in 30 ips (AES), and/or half inch tapes, please reach out.

  • All our tape copies are dubbed directly from the master tape by Jason Smith at Grey Matter Audio, as opposed to being dubbed from a copy. By offering tapes made directly from the master, we are able to get as close as possible to the sound of the master tape itself and avoid generational loss.

  • Unfortunately, that is what USPS charges. We don’t make money on shipping. The more LPs we ship together, the more the shipping price can come down, so please feel free to reach out if you want to buy several.

  • Even when trying to deliver the best product possible - and it absolutely is our goal -, things sometimes happen. If you have an issue with your LP, please reach out to us and we will do our best to make it right. We want you to be happy with our records!

  • Our album covers are by Jerome Witz and Element-S. They also designed the Analog Tone Factory logo for us, and they are awesome!
